The following is a message from the University of Toronto Epilepsy Research Program (UTERP) about an upcoming epilepsy research meeting:

The next UTERP/OBI Fellows’ Meeting will take place on Friday, September 21, at 4 pm in Room 4227 of the Medical Sciences Building.
Speaker: Dr. Paul Hwang
Topic: Randomized controlled trials for new anti-epileptic drugs: The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Dr. Hwang will also be discussing his OBI funded clinical trial of n-3 PUFAs in epilepsy.

Academic Year 2012-2013 Return!

Hello everybody!

SECA is back and ready to roll for the 2012-2013 academic year at the University of Toronto! We are open to recruiting new members and getting more people involved in improving epilepsy care on campus, so if you’re interested, give us a shout!

This will be a short post just to say that we’re around; more information about SECA’s exploits during the summer, the new executive committee, and upcoming events will be posted soon. Until then, stay tuned!

Official Purple Day Ambassadors

SECA has been officially recognized as Purple Day Ambassadors. Since 2010, SECA (formerly known as SACEC) has been involved with bringing about awareness of epilepsy at the University of Toronto St. George campus. Our flagship event every year is the Purple Day celebrations on March 26th or a nearby date. We are honoured to have received recognition for our efforts. As official Purple Day representatives for the University of Toronto, we will continue to support Cassidy Megan’s dream.

Purple Day receives Royal Assent!

Great news everyone! Bill C-278, the Purple Day Act, received Royal Assent on June 28, 2012! This means that March 26th of every year is now legally recognized by the Canadian government as Purple Day, a day of epilepsy awareness, a day where Canadians should wear purple to promote a greater awareness of epilepsy and to support the 300,000 Canadians living with epilepsy!

Congratulations to Cassidy Megan and everyone else behind the Purple Day campaign! Cassidy, your dream is one step closer to reality! We at SECA fully support you and will continue to celebrate Purple Day every March 26th on the University of Toronto St. George Campus!

To everyone else in the world who celebrates Purple Day, keep up the great work! Together, we can make sure the world celebrates Purple Day and everyone is made aware of the impact of epilepsy!

Travel Grant Winners

Congratulations to Hunter Trenholme and Darcy Enns on winning travel grants to the Annual Epilepsy Conference on June 2, 2012 at the YMCA-Metro Central! The Society of Epilepsy Care and Awareness (SECA) and Epilepsy Toronto are proud to have them for an excellent conference on advances in the science, care and social issues of epilepsy.

Travel Grants

As we have done in the past, we will be offering our student travel grants for the upcoming annual epilepsy conference taking place on June 2, 2012.

This year, we will be offering 3 travel grants of up to $40. You can download the application here. Applications can be submitted to our e-mail address, seca.utoronto@gmail.com. In the body of the e-mail, please briefly (no more than a short paragraph) explain why you think you should receive one of our grants. The deadline to apply for the grants is Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at noon. Late applications will not be considered.

We will announce the winners of the travel grants on Thursday, May 31, 2012. The grants will be offered as reimbursements and will be given as a cheque in person.

Return and Epilepsy Toronto Annual Epilepsy Conference 2012

Hello all our friends in cyberspace!

We at SECA are back to updating you on whats going on in the epilepsy community! Its been busy for all of us completing exams, projects, and applications for summer work/summer school, but now that everything is settled we can get back to whats important: epilepsy!

Coming up on Saturday June 2, 2012, we have the Epilepsy Toronto Annual Epilepsy Conference 2012! SECA is partnering with Epilepsy Toronto, as we do every year, to bring you the latest in epilepsy research and care. The theme for this year’s conference is “Quality of Life with Epilepsy”, and we have a variety of speakers on the topic. The keynote speaker is Patricia Gibson, MSW, from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, and she will be speaking about “Quality of Life Issues in Epilepsy”. Other topics and speakers include:

“Transitioning into Adult Years. What should I know?”
Speaker: Geraldine Cullen-Dean (SickKids)
Discussion of the strategies families can use to address the challenges for youth transitioning to adult epilepsy care and information about community resources.

“”Not epilepsy? Really?” … Understanding Psychogenic Non-epileptic Seizures (PNES)”
Speakers: Dr. Sherese Ali and Dr. Peter Tai (Toronto Western Hospital)
The neurological and psychiatric perspective on what is commonly referred to as pseudo-seizures & how this is managed.

“Epilepsy Research. What’s new?”
Speaker: Dr. Mac Burnham (University of Toronto)
Latest news about epilepsy research world-wide and the technological advancements impacting epilepsy care and management, particularly on the Epilepsy Discovery Project with the Ontario Brain Institute.

Happy Purple Day!!!!

Hey everybody, its Purple Day! We at SECA are wishing you all the best today, and we hope you’re wearing purple in support of epilepsy awareness!

We have set up tables at Gerstein Library and at Sid Smith Hall on the University of Toronto. Feel free to swing by and talk to us, maybe even pick up some free stuff!

Also, Cassidy Megan is in Toronto today! She has quite a busy schedule, having opened the Toronto Stock Exchange and hanging out at the Hospital for Sick Children. She is also running a fashion show with Epilepsy Toronto tonight at 45 The Esplanade! Keep your eyes on the news, or if you have time come on out and support Purple Day!
